Many enterprises have a clear need to act and manage their document creation, organization, access and distribution processes. Document management is a category of solutions that has been around for quite some time and well suited to generate good open source offerings, as typical enterprise requirements are similar from company to company. Helpful also is the fact that “open standards” for content/document formats or access and exchange methods have been established.
This paper, authored by Optaros´ content management practice leads in both the U.S. and Europe, explores the differences between enterprise content management and document management, overall functions of document management, and why open source is well positioned to help with enterprise challenges. Seven open source document management solutions are reviewed in terms of architecture and the main categories of functionality.
